Gold chains by weight and karat
How much is a gold chain worth by weight?
A chain's melt value comes from its gold-bearing weight, karat, and the current price of pure gold. Length, width, and link style can change the weight, but they do not replace it. A large hollow chain can contain less gold than a smaller solid chain.
Use the table for a quick estimate or enter the exact piece below. If the seller does not state the gram weight, you cannot make a reliable price-to-melt comparison from photos, millimeters, or length alone.

At this reference, one gram of solid 14K gold contains about $76.42 of gold. Multiply that figure by the chain's verified gold-bearing weight for a first-pass estimate.

Calculate this chain's melt value.
Enter the chain's verified weight and karat. Subtract a pendant, stones, or any non-gold parts, then add the asking price, shipping, tax, and other buying costs if you want a price-to-melt comparison.
This is a metal-content estimate, not an appraisal or a promise of what a dealer or refiner will pay. Verify the metal, purity, and usable weight before relying on the result.
What changes the answer
Solid, semi-solid, and hollow are not the same weight.
Solid chain: the links are solid through their cross-section. Use the verified finished weight, then subtract any non-gold pendant or components.
Hollow or semi-solid chain: the links contain empty space. Do not estimate the weight from the width of a solid chain that looks similar. Use the actual gram weight of the exact length and variant.
Clasps and fittings: springs, solder, repairs, and mixed-metal findings can make part of the measured weight less pure than the stamped chain.
Gold-filled, vermeil, plated, or gold-tone: the full chain weight cannot be valued as solid karat gold. The gold layer is only part of the item.
Chain sold by the inch: multiply the selected length by the seller's verified weight per inch, if provided. A price per inch without a matching weight and karat is not enough for a melt comparison.
Price over melt
What is a reasonable price for a gold chain?
There is no universal fair premium. A wearable chain can be worth more than its gold because of manufacturing, condition, style, brand, and seller service. The useful number is the premium you are actually paying after shipping, tax, and fees.
For example, 20 grams of solid 14K gold contains about $1,528.46 in gold at this reference. An all-in price of $1,681.31 is 1.10 times melt; $1,910.58 is 1.25 times melt. Those ratios describe the premium, not whether the chain is authentic or whether its workmanship is worth the difference.
Confirm the exact variant, length, width, construction, gram weight, karat, availability, return terms, and all-in price. Then compare the result with other chains on the same basis. Read the near-spot buying checklist.
