Understanding metal value

Silver price per gram by purity

The price of one gram of silver depends on how much of that gram is actually silver. Use the current table below for 999 fine, 958 Britannia, 925 sterling, and 800 silver, then multiply the matching value by the silver-bearing weight of the piece.

A fineness mark states the precious-metal content in parts per thousand. Fine silver marked 999 is 99.9% silver, Britannia silver marked 958 is 95.8%, sterling marked 925 is 92.5%, and 800 silver is 80%. UK hallmarking guidance recognizes these silver fineness standards. Use the 999 fine silver calculator, or see a worked sterling weight and buying-cost example.

A heavy-looking object may contain a weighted base, steel spring, glass, stones, or another metal. Hollow pieces can be lighter than they appear. A silverplate mark describes a surface layer, not solid silver, so the object's full weight cannot be valued as sterling.

Current market reference: $1.67 per gram of pure silver, checked Nov 8, 2026, 7:57 AM. These estimates describe metal content only. They are not dealer, refiner, or resale offers.

silverPurityCommon mark1 gram5 grams10 grams20 grams
Fine silver 99.9% 999 or Fine $1.67$8.34$16.68$33.37
Britannia silver 95.8% 958 or Britannia $1.60$8.00$16.00$32.00
Sterling silver 92.5% 925 or Sterling $1.54$7.72$15.45$30.89
800 silver 80.0% 800 $1.34$6.68$13.36$26.72

Use only the weight of the silver-bearing parts. Stones, springs, clasps, fillings, and mixed-metal components can make the finished item heavier than the metal being valued.

Before you compare prices

Silver pieces can have a modest melt value compared with shipping, testing, or resale fees. Check the actual weight, the mark, and the seller's return terms before deciding that the asking price leaves room for a purchase.

The calculator on this page starts with this metal and lets you use a current reference price or enter your own. The price-to-melt guide shows how extra costs and non-metal weight change a buying comparison. At auction, the maximum-bid calculator works backward from your melt-value limit after premiums, tax, shipping, and fixed fees. You can also browse the public feed to see recently checked listings.
